Forvo.com: il meglio del Web 2.0
Avete mai sentito parlare di Cyanide & Happiness? E’ un fumetto che potete trovare sul sito explosm.net il cui umorismo basato sul cinismo lo rende originale e diverso da tutti i fumetti che abbia mai letto.
Ogni volta che dovevo segnalare a un amico quanto fosse divertente cambiavo il modo di pronunciare “Cyanide” perchè non avevo idea di quale fosse la pronuncia corretta.
Dal momento che l’ inglese non è la mia lingua madre a volte è difficile immaginare quale sia la corretta pronuncia delle parole, soprattutto se pensate che la maggior parte del tempo ho a che fare con del testo scritto piuttosto che con del parlato.
Allora qualche giorno fa ho pensato di cercare qualche risorsa su Internet che mi permettesse di risolvere questo tipo di problema, e mi sono sorpreso quando ho scoperto Forvo.com.
Oltre ad essere la risoluzione al problema citato penso che sia l’esempio perfetto di cosa siano il Web 2.0 e i contenuti generati dagli utenti.
Lo scopo di questo sito è di creare un database con la pronuncia di tutte le parole di tutte le lingue del mondo. Chiaramente questo può sembrare un pò ambizioso e sicuramente un obiettivo difficile da raggiungere, ma il potenziale di Internet è così grande che non sembra impossibile farlo.
Chiunque può iscriversi e fare diverse cose: ascoltare la pronuncia delle parole che gli interessano, votarle in modo da segnalare quale sia la migliore tra quelle presenti. Ovviamente può anche postare la sua pronuncia delle parole che conosce della propra lingua contribuendo così alla causa di Forvo. Così il database, potremmo dire “spontaneamente”, diventa più grande ogni volta che un utente contribuisce con del contenuto.
Penso che ogni studente di lingue straniere abbia sempre sognato di avere uno strumento come questo, e ciò è possibile solo grazie a Internet.
Qualcuno potrebbe obiettare che chiunque potrebbe iscriversi e postare pronunce sbagliate per prendersi gioco degli altri utenti, ma è lo stesso discorso che possiamo fare per Wikipedia: la comunità di utenti si controlla da sè e in particolare per Forvo può dare voti negativi alle pronunce sbagliate e postarne di giuste per contrastare questo fenomeno.
Personalmente ho provato a cercare un pò di parole a caso di cui conosco la pronuncia e sono stato sorpreso dall’onestà degli utenti e ho notato che persone di ogni età usano questo strumento: ho sentito la voce di persone giovani e meno giovani da tutte le parti del mondo, che contribuiscono insieme a questo interessante progetto!
La gente può collaborare per creare qualunque cosa se solo ha gli strumenti, ora grazie a Internet è possibile creare questi strumenti ed accedervi con facilità.
E allora siano benvenute iniziative come Forvo, che tirano fuori il meglio di noi: impegno e collaborazione per creare qualcosa di speciale insieme.

Have you ever heard of Cyanide & Happiness? It is a comic hosted on the website explosm.net which has a singular cynism-based humor which makes it original and different from any other comic I’ve ever read.
Any time I had to tell a friend how fun is that comic I changed the way I pronounced “Cyanide” because I had no idea of what was the correct way to do that.
You must know that since english is not my mother language (I’m italian) sometimes it is difficoult to guess what is the correct pronounciation of the words, specially if you think that most of the time I have to read written text rather than listening to speech.
So a few days ago I thought that maybe I could find some interesting resources on the Internet in order to get rid of this problem, and I was very surprised when I discovered Forvo.com.
Besides being the solution of the problem descripted above I think that it is the perfect example of the concept of Web 2.0 and user generated content.
The purpose of this website is to create a database with the pronounciation of all the words in all languages of the world. This sounds very ambitious and a difficoult to achieve objective, but Internet’s potential is so great that it does not sound impossible to do it.
Anyone can subscribe to this website and do many things: listen to the pronounciation of the words he is interested in, rate them in order to pick the best among the ones precedently posted.
Of course he can also post his own pronounciation of the words he know from his language contributing to Forvo’s cause. So the database, we could say “spontaneously”, gets bigger any time a user contributes with content.
I think that every student which studies a foreign language has always dreamt an instrument like this, and this is possible thanks to the Internet.
Someone might argue that anyone could subscribe and add wrong pronounciations in order to make fun of the other users, but it’s the same thing we can say for wikipedia: the community controls itself and in particular for Forvo is able to give negative ratings to these wrong pronounciations and post correct ones to contrast this phenomenon.
Personally I tried it searching random words of whom I know the correct pronounciation and I was pleasently surprised by the honesty of the users and I also found out that people of any ages use this instrument; I think I recognised the voice of young and old people from all over the world, together contributing to this interesting project!
People can collaborate to create anything if they only have the instruments, now thanks to the Internet it is possible to create these instruments and reach them easily.
So let’s welcome all initiatives like Forvo, bringing out the best from us: efforts and collaboration in order to create something special together.
